Rice Cookers are invaluable if you eat rice at home often. All of the rice cookers below should produce light, fluffy rice. The variation comes in capacity, and the inclusion of extra features such as a flavor scenter and a warm setting to keep the rice warm for hours after cooking.
My personal favorite - the 75-minute timer with a signal bell and automatic shut-off comes in very handy when you're too busy stir-frying to tend to the rice. Besides cooking rice, I use it to steam fish, meat, and vegetables. A unique feature is the flavor scenter that allows you to add ginger, spices, or other seasonings to your steamed dish. There is also a divided steaming tray, allowing you to steam two types of food at once. It has a 4 quart bowl and a 8-cup rice bowl.
For the price, (under $35.00 U.S), this is an excellent bargain. It makes up to 14 cups of cooked rice, and comes with a warm mode that keeps the rice warm for up to 12 hours after cooking - a great idea if you're making congee at night for breakfast the next morning.
Several of my forum readers have recommended this rice cooker. Features include a glass lid for easy viewing and the ability to cook food and rice at the same time. It makes up to 6 cups of cooked rice.
This smaller version of the Black and Decker Flavor Scenter Steamer has a 2 1/2 quart bowl and a 4 cup rice capacity. Also, it doesn't have the divided steaming tray. A good choice for college students.
